Enrich Summer Park Days

The Events Committee would like us all to stay connected this summer. Please add our park days to your calendars! We had a lot of fun last summer and would like to do it again, plus see some more families join us. :)

This year we are doing things slightly different and setting exact dates. There was some confusion last year, hopefully this will clear things up. All dates are Thursdays and we will meet at noon. Of course, anyone is welcome to go to the park any other day this summer and invite our entire Enrich population to join them! ;)

The two parks we use are Metro Beach and Stony Creek.

Our 'official' Park Days are:

June 3rd--Metro Beach
June 17th--Stony Creek
July 15th--Metro Beach
July 29th--Stony Creek
August 12th--Metro Beach
August 19th--Stony Creek

At Metro we will meet at the covered picnic tables behind the Tot-Lot.

At Stony Creek we will meet at Eastwood Beach.

Please bring all your picnic supplies, including a blanket. We will not be renting pavilions because of cost and availability, which means we may not be able to get one.

METRO BEACH--There is a daily entry fee of $5 or yearly of $25. Our meeting place will be within easy walking distance of tennis courts, playgrounds, the beach, Squirt Zone and a pool. ($2 additional entry fee for the pool) Please plan accordingly. We are going to just enjoy each others company and be very casual so feel free to plan to do what activities your family would enjoy.

STONY CREEK--The daily and yearly entry fee is the same as Metro Beach. If you buy a yearly pass it will be good at both parks. Our meeting place is at Eastwood Beach. Follow the signs at the park entrance, or ask attendant for directions. It is a big park. There is a bike and hiking trail.

Student Council Election Results

The Enrich Board would like to thank all of the candidates who ran for Student Council positions. There were many qualified students and we were greatly encouraged to see so many willing to serve. Beginning with our Fall 2010 session, we will be implementing a new attendance policy. In order to attend Enrich, all families are required to have their oldest homeschooled child in at least the 1st grade and said child must be 6 by December 1.

This high school symposium is targeted at those families who are either considering teaching high school at home in future years or those who are in the midst of this exciting adventure. Good high school planning takes place before your teen enters 9th grade, and becoming familiar with aspects of teaching high school (earlier rather than later) builds confidence and prepares you for the job. As your child grows older, you may be considering high school at home – but you've got your doubts! Why is homeschooling high school a crucial decision for your teen? How is it possible? What help is available? We'll answer your questions, but more importantly, we'll encourage and challenge you to explore the steps you should take as you weigh the possibility of teaching high school at home.

Developing a Plan for High School: Sample Four-Year Plans
How do you plan a program for your high school homeschooler? What subjects do you teach and when? Do you follow a basic high school plan, a general college prep plan, or a rigorous college prep plan? How do you evaluate credits? Determine grades for a course? What about the need for a transcript and diploma? If you are just beginning to think about homeschooling during the high school years, this seminar will help you organize your thoughts and begin laying the groundwork for a viable four-year plan.

High School Transcript Clinic: Practical Tips and Record Keeping Help
A high school transcript is easy to create yet a vital part of your child’s high school records. In this interactive, practical seminar, you’ll create a transcript that can be used as a pattern when designing your own. We’ll guide you through transcript essentials, evaluation of credit, grading guidelines and scales, and calculation of grade point averages (GPAs). You’ll receive sample transcripts depicting other formats for you to consider. In addition, you’ll learn about necessary record keeping for high school and how to track your student’s progress through the high school years.

The College Admissions Process: The Homeschooled Student's Guide
You are not only your child’s teacher; you are also his guidance counselor! Find out how to maneuver through the entire college admissions process, from narrowing down the selection of colleges to filling out college applications, applying for financial aid, and asking the right questions that will help you discern whether your child is spiritually, academically, and emotionally prepared for college.

Speaker Profile:
Diane Kummer - HSLDA’s High School Coordinator
Diane and her husband Tom homeschooled their two children from kindergarten through 12th grade using a variety of teaching options. The Kummers’ daughter has completed her master’s degree in government, and their son earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications/public relations. As an HSLDA High School Coordinator, Diane regularly speaks at homeschool conferences, writes articles and brochures on high school topics, and has a heart to inspire moms in their teaching. “The joy and grace of the Lord are available—and He has provided many avenues of care and help along the way,” she says. She provides personal consultation to HSLDA members and encourages parents to keep going and to enjoy teaching high school. During her homeschooling years, Diane coordinated events, activities, and support meetings for her church’s 190-plus homeschooling families while developing a program that provided evaluation of credits, diplomas, and transcripts for high school families. Along with songwriters, singers, and actresses from her church, Diane was involved in two videos created by the FunnyMoms to encourage and uplift homeschooling mothers. Her love for math is evident as she continues to teach high school-level math classes for homeschooled students.

Unique opportunity available! Many of you have heard of the Exchange City program. It is being conducted in our area again December 11 and 12. This is a great opportunity for your student to be part of a larger group of homeschoolers to actually see what it takes to run a city. For more information, follow the links below, or start at www.frc.info to get more information. The deadline is fast approaching, and 80 students ages 9 and up are needed, ESPECIALLY HIGH SCHOOLERS! These older students get to run for office, own businesses, be the bank president, and other jobs within Exchange City especially formatted for an older student. Check out the info, and have your student jump in for a hands on experience!

MI/OH families take advantage of last year's FRC MEMBER PRICE of only $40 PLUS receive a FREE Exchange City Student Log ($20 value!) when you register before August 1, 2008.

Independent Study Program:
This means the student will complete the economics activities at home independently then attend the FRC Exchange City Training Day and Simulation Day with other homeschooling students registered to participate in this program.

FRC members: $45.00 per student (after Aug. 31, 2008)
Nonmembers: $65.00 per student

This fee includes student checkbook, online instructional manual, workshop and ongoing support, and the two-day simulation experience at Exchange City.
Restricted to ages 9 and up

Mentor Study Program:
This means the student will be assigned an FRC Mentor who will work with the student on-line via regular weekly email, and phone support when necessary, to guide the student through the program time line in order to complete all economics activities prior to the Exchange City visit, when the student will attend the FRC Exchange City Training & Simulation days with other homeschooling students registered to participate in this program.

FRC members: $125.00 per student
Nonmembers: $250.00 per student

This fee includes, an assigned FRC Mentor to guide the student through the program timeline, student checkbook, online instructional manual, Student Log Book, and the two-day simulation experience at Exchange City.

All programs are restricted to ages 9 and up.

We have changed meeting locations!

Due to the loss of key classrooms at our previous location (Grace Community Church), the board has found a new church that will meet our needs...

Warren Woods Baptist Church
14251 12 Mile Road (just east of Schoenherr)
Warren, MI

We will meet on Thursdays beginning with our Kick-off Meeting on September 11 (7 pm), Registration on September 18 (6:30 pm and following) and first day of class on September 25 (12:30-3:30 pm).

We will be mailing our kick-off letter with more details the week of August 18. Please direct any questions to alicejohnson59@comcast.net.

Summer's here but we still need to think of the fall

Not much to report, but for those interested here's an update:

The Enrich board has met and we are working diligently to find a new location that includes a gym. Please keep this program in your prayers as we work through the summer.

We are also completing the class schedule for the fall. We will post it as soon as it is finished.

CPR/First Aid Class

Enrich families:

We have a wonderful opportunity to learn CPR/First Aid just in time for summer!

This is a "non-certified" class, meaning you will not get a certificate upon completion. But, you WILL learn all you need to learn!!!

Training will be open to all ages, as long as they can sit and pay attention. (We will have space available for younger siblings to play without distracting others!)

We will meet at:

Bethel Baptist Church
24600 Little Mack
St. Clair Shores
(just south of 10 Mile)

10am-3pm

We will break for lunch. You can either bring a sack lunch or there are plenty of fast food places around.

Cost is free.

We are asking for a $1 or $2 donation if you can afford it to give to the church for letting us use their gym for this.

Books are available at the Red Cross for around $15.00. We can share books if you cannot afford one or if you don't want to buy one.

Come help celebrate INCH's 25th year of serving home school families in Michigan. Please pray for God’s blessing upon this event and for His assistance with the many details that still need to be accomplished.
